In yesterday’s post- The Apocalypse Opener- I discussed an opener available on the web, where a guy approaches a girl and asks her to come home with him point blank, and apparently works wonders. In that post, I speculated as to how successful something like that could actually be. And lo and behold, I have actually found empirical research addressing that same exact question.

Apparently, in a 1989 study done by Clark and Hatfield, entitled “Gender Differences in Receptivity to Sexual Offers”, the two researchers had both attractive male and female undergraduate co-eds approach 144 members of the opposite sex and ask one of the following three questions:

1. “Would you go out with me tonight?”
2. “Would you come over to my apartment tonight?”
3. “Would you go to bed with me tonight?”

And here’s how the respondents answered, broken down by women and men:

So what are we to make of this data? First, some interesting things jump out at us. Both sexes seem pretty readily available to date attractive people who approach them cold, with more women actually interested in dates with total strangers. However, when you get to the second question, the sexes move in polar opposite directions. Only 3% of women are interested in going to a stranger’s apartment, while the percentage of men interested in such a scenario actually increases. Zero women are interested in sex right off the bat, but even more men are interested in that scenario over the other two.

Conclusion: Women are overwhelmingly open to dating. Probably, 3% of women are interested in sex, but only if phrased in an indirect manner- when phrased directly their social wiring is tripped and they back off. As for the guys, they are just as open as women to dating but are far more interested in no strings-attached sex. As for why they said yes in lower quantities to the dating question, maybe they assumed they would be responsible for all the playing and paying and weren’t interested in that, but when offered sex on a platter, couldn’t refuse.

Apparently there was another study in 2005 by Martin Voracek in which 6% of women agreed to sex with a stranger. In the study, 100 women were approached by various men and asked directly if they would go to bed with them. Taken from an analysis of the study: “After inputting the overall mean age as a conservative estimate for missing values, females’ mean age (and SD) for the six successful trials was 36.8 (7.5) yr., and 32.5 (6.2) yr. for the 94 unsuccessful trials. Estimated individual ages for the successful trials were 28, 32, 35, 38, 38, and 50 years. Therefore, five out of the six successfully approached females were older than the male requestor……. Further, from the age estimates stated in the article, we calculated that approximately 75% of the approached women were at least in their late twenties or older, some of them significantly so. Therefore, it is evident that both the women and the male requestor in this study were older and probably sexually more experienced than the subjects recruited for the Clark-Hatfield studies who were undergraduates in their early to mid-twenties.”

As demonstrated, the main difference in the success rates between the two studies was that the Voracek study included women who were much older than the Clark-Hatfield study, and in many cases in their 30s, 40s or older. As a result, some of the social stigma surrounding one-night stands had been eliminated with these older women, so they were more likely to act on their sexual urges.

Conclusion: If you want to reap success with the Apocalypse Opener, make sure you target older cougars in your vicinity.
